SUP Explorer | Top 6 Places to Paddleboard in the Netherlands

The Netherlands might be flat, but it is far from boring for paddle boarders. With its intricate network of canals, slow-moving rivers, and calm lakes, it offers a surprising range of SUP experiences. Whether you're gliding past windmills or paddling through quiet nature reserves, the Dutch water landscape is made for exploration.

  1. Amsterdam Canals
  2. Biesbosch National Park
  3. Friesland Lakes
  4. Utrecht Canals
  5. Loosdrechtse Plassen
  6. Zeeland Coast

1. Amsterdam Canals

Amsterdam is famous for its canals, and paddle boarding through them offers a new perspective on the city. Early mornings or quiet weekdays are best for avoiding boat traffic. You’ll pass 17th-century architecture, bridges, and floating houseboats. Some routes even let you see landmarks like the Rijksmuseum or Westerkerk from the water.

Stick to designated routes and avoid the busiest canals. Local SUP schools can help you plan a safe and legal path

2. Biesbosch National Park

Located between Rotterdam and Breda, this freshwater tidal wetland is one of the most peaceful places to paddle in the country. The park is filled with narrow creeks, willow forests, and birdlife. It feels surprisingly wild, despite being close to major cities.

Bring a dry bag and a waterproof map. Many creeks look similar, and cell coverage can be limited deep in the park

3. Friesland Lakes

The northern province of Friesland is known for its watersports and open-minded outdoor culture. Paddle boarding is popular across its many interconnected lakes, including Sneekermeer and Tjeukemeer. You'll find marinas, campgrounds, and small towns along the shore, making this a great area for multi-day trips.

Wind can be a factor on larger lakes. Use a touring board and check forecasts before paddling longer distances

4. Utrecht Canals

Utrecht’s canal system is smaller and less crowded than Amsterdam’s but just as charming. The inner city canals are lined with wharf cellars and leafy paths. Outside the city center, the canals connect to the Kromme Rijn River, where the scenery becomes greener and more relaxed.

Avoid peak hours and weekends in the center. Early morning paddles offer the best experience with fewer boats and smoother water

5. Loosdrechtse Plassen

This lake area, located between Amsterdam and Utrecht, is full of small islands, reed-lined shores, and open water. It’s popular with sailors and paddlers alike. The wide, flat lakes are good for beginners, and there are several launch points with rentals and cafes nearby.

Stay near the edges of the lakes if you're new to paddling. Central areas can get choppy with boat traffic on busy days

6. Zeeland Coast

For a more coastal experience, head to the province of Zeeland in the southwest. Paddle boarding is popular along calm bays and beaches, especially near places like Veere and Zoutelande. The coastline here is dotted with islands and protected by dikes, making the water more manageable than typical ocean paddling.

Always check tide times and wind speeds before going out. Coastal paddling requires a bit more planning, even in protected areas

New to paddling these spots? A few beginner tips go a long way, and a versatile all-around board will handle most of what the Netherlands throws at you.
