Frequently Asked Questions
For beginners, choose a board with an EPS foam core — lighter and more buoyant than PE, making it easier to catch waves and stay afloat. Match the length to your height using the size chart. The Thurso Crest and Ripple are strong beginner options for riders in the 4-5ft range.
Position yourself just behind where waves are breaking. Face the shore, watch over your shoulder, and as a wave approaches, kick hard and push the board forward. When you feel the wave lift you, stop kicking and ride. Practice in small white water (broken waves) before trying green unbroken waves.
Swim fins are recommended — they significantly improve wave-catching ability and control in the water. Use short, stiff bodyboard fins rather than long scuba fins. As a beginner, you can start without fins in small waves but you will progress faster with them.
A wetsuit or rash guard for sun and abrasion protection, board shorts or bikini, and a leash on the wrist or upper arm. In cold water, a 3-4mm wetsuit is essential. Bodyboard fins and reef boots are recommended for rocky breaks. Always apply sunscreen even in a wetsuit.
Use your body weight to steer — shift weight to the rail (edge) in the direction you want to turn. Drag the hand on the turn side in the water as a rudder. Kicking with fins on one side also helps steer. Practice weight shifts in small, easy waves before attempting cutbacks and turns.
