      Frequently Asked Questions

First, determine whether you need a replacement center fin or side fins. Thurso Surf offers Quick Lock and Click Fin options that install securely without tools, making fin replacement fast and simple.

If you want better tracking and more glide on flat water or touring adventures, a touring fin is a performance upgrade over a standard center fin. For shallower rivers, lakes, or rocky areas, shorter and more flexible fins can help reduce snagging while maintaining control.
SUP fins help your paddle board track straighter, stay more stable, and feel more controlled on the water. They reduce side-to-side wobble, improve directional stability, and help the board handle different water conditions more smoothly.
It is possible to paddle without a fin, but it is not recommended. Without fins, your SUP loses directional stability, making it harder to paddle straight and much more likely to drift or spin.

A proper fin setup, including the center fin and side fins when needed, keeps your board balanced and tracking smoothly for a safer and more enjoyable paddling experience.
Thurso paddle boards use different fin systems depending on the model, including Quick Lock fins, Click Fins, and some standard US fin box setups. Before ordering a replacement, check your board's fin box style to make sure you choose the right fit.

In general, the center fin provides straight tracking and directional stability, while side fins can add extra grip, stability, and turn response.
Most recreational paddlers do well with a single large center fin because it gives good tracking without extra drag. Boards with side fin boxes in a 2+1 setup can use smaller side fins for improved turn response in surf or choppy conditions.

For flatwater paddling, a single fin is usually the most efficient setup.
Standard rigid fins usually need to go in checked luggage because of their length. Shorter travel fins may be more convenient for travel, but always check airline rules before you fly.

Remove all fins before packing your board in a backpack or travel bag to help prevent damage in transit.
Installation depends on the fin system on your board. Thurso Quick Lock and Click Fin systems are designed for fast, tool-free installation and removal. US fin box fins slide into the fin box channel and secure with a fin screw.

Always check that the fin is seated properly and locked in place before paddling.
