We've had this board for 3 years and have had to replace the fins every year. Very easy to lose. I dunno, we try to be careful, but for the 3rd year in a row we just finished a day at the lake and a fin was just gone. This was in a reservoir so it's not like we were bumping rocks going down the river. When I install the fins, I always shake them to make sure they're on nice and tight and they seem fine, but I think they must just take an easy bump in the wrong direction and it's just bye bye. We have other boards from other companies that we have owned for a longer period of time and we do not have this problem. I will say from experience though that with 2/3 of the fins on a lake it is still pretty stable and easy to navigate so there's that.
Hi Mike,
Thank you for sharing your experience, and we're really sorry to hear about the frustration with the fins.
In general, the side fins are most impactful for surfing or making sharper turns—so for regular paddling on calm water, using just the center fin still offers good stability and tracking.
That said, we understand losing fins can be inconvenient. We recommend making sure the screws are fully tightened when installing the side fins, as a loose connection can sometimes cause them to fall out during use, even with light contact.
We appreciate your feedback and are always working to improve our designs—thank you again for supporting Thurso Surf!
Kind regards,
Thurso Surf Team
beware of these fins, they are extremely easy to lose and even with the tightening threads they still don't help
Dear Kerri,
Thank you for reaching out, and I’m very sorry to hear about your recent experience with the fin system. We truly understand how disappointing it can be to encounter any issues while preparing for a great day on the water.
Our Click Fin system is designed for quick and secure installation, and in most cases—especially when the locking mechanism is fully engaged—it provides a reliable hold. That said, we do appreciate that every setup environment can vary slightly, and it’s possible for unexpected issues to arise.
To ensure the best fit, we recommend carefully aligning the fin and pressing it firmly until it clicks into place, followed by tightening the screw completely until it passes through and locks. This step is important for ensuring a secure connection, especially when using the board in dynamic water conditions. The system is also compatible with a wide range of FCS-style fins, offering flexibility for different preferences.
If you’d like a replacement to feel confident moving forward, we’d be happy to assist. Please let us know, and we can arrange a solution right away.
Thank you again for your feedback, and we’re here to help however we can.
Warm regards,
Thurso Surf Support Team
The fins do help, however even when locked they are easy to lose. I list two already
I notice that the fins help with tracking, especially when there are waves that can push you off course. But remember to screw them in so that you don't lose them.
Wear what you are the most comfortable in! Clothing that allows free movement is best, and clothing that won’t be too heavy when wet.
For flat water paddling you will need one centre fin. For any type of waves, or paddle surfing, look at 3, 4 and 5 fin set.
Your order will be processed within 3 business days. The order processing cut-off time is 3 pm ET. For orders placed after 3 pm ET, processing will begin the next business day.
