SUP Explorer – The Best Places to Stand Up Paddle Board
Launching from Sunset Beach is a great spot for sunset especially as it is southwest-facing. The large stretch of sandy beach gives you plenty of places to start from. I like the evening as the ocean seems to be calmer then.
You can paddle east into False Creek towards Granville Island and Science World (just be sure to be cautious of boat traffic especially when traveling under the bridge), or west towards English Bay. East is a fun perspective to see the marinas, other watercrafts, and floating homes. Going west heads towards open ocean so the destination can be as far as you want – stay on the south shore and head over to Jericho/UBC or following the north shore you can circumnavigate Stanley Park. The water gets rougher the farther out west you go be sure to stay close to shore if you are not an advanced paddler.
SUP Explorer Tips For Your Visit to Sunset Beach
- There is paid parking by the concession stand and aquatic centre, or you can park for free on some of the nearby side streets
- Make sure to be aware of signage as sometimes the water access is closed due to contaminants
- Be cautious of boat traffic. There is a lot of traffic in False Creek and the Burrard Inlet
