SUP Explorer – The Best Places to Stand Up Paddle Board

Lake Willoughby is a gorgeous glacial water lake in Orleans, Vermont. It’s surrounded by mountains and a state forest which make for amazing views. We love the clear waters (you can see to the bottom in many spots) and incredible landscape. You can access the lake and launch your paddle board from parking lots on either end of the lake (the north side parking lot is much larger if it’s a crowded day). Parking is free. Important to note that the water can be chilly as parts of the lake are over 300 feet deep.

SUP Explorer Tips For Your Visit to Lake Willoughby

  • During the summer, there can be quite a bit of boat traffic but late summer/early fall is perfect and you will likely have the lake almost to yourself.
  • Be sure to pack everything you need (food, water, etc.) as the area is fairly rural.
  • Cell service is often limited in the area.
  • Check the weather before you go. Given that the lake is in between two mountains, winds can sometimes be very sudden and strong.
